Who qualifies
To qualify for OHIP, you must meet all of the minimum
qualifications listed below plus at least one of the additional requirements.
To meet the minimum qualifications you must:
· be physically in Ontario for 153 days in any 12‑month period
· be physically in Ontario for at least 153 days
of the first 183 days immediately after you began living in the province
· make Ontario your primary home
You must also meet at least one of the following
additional requirements. You:
· are a Canadian citizen
Moving in Canada
If you’re moving permanently to another province or
territory in Canada, OHIP will cover you for the same services as when you are
going away temporarily until the last
day of the second full month after you leave Ontario.
Remember to apply
for coverage in your new province or territory.
How to qualify – ohip
coverage while outside Canada
You qualify if you
have:
· a valid Ontario health card
· lived in Ontario for less than six months and
will be away for no more than 30 days
· lived in Ontario for more than six months and
will be away no more than 212 days in any 12-month period
Away for more than
seven months
If you plan to be outside
Canada for more than seven months in any 12-month period you can keep your OHIP
coverage for up to two years if you:
· have a valid health card
· make
Ontario your primary home
· will be in Ontario for at least 153 days a year in each of the two years
immediately before you leave the country
Reapplying for OHIP
If you’ve been out
of Ontario for more than 212 days in any 12‑month
period, you may have to reapply for OHIP. Contact ServiceOntario to be
sure.
If you have to reapply, please bring the following to
ServiceOntario:
· completed application form
· three original documents from the OHIP document
list
